Fare Walk for food allergy Oct. 3 in Westport

Tens of thousands of people will gather at walks in nearly 60 communities nationwide, this fall, in support of family members, friends, co-workers and neighbors living with life-threatening food allergies. Join FARE and the food allergy community in Fairfield County to raise critical funding, for and awareness about this growing public health issue. The FARE Walk for Food Allergy in Connecticut will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, at Sherwood Island State Park, Westport, from 1-4.  This family fun day will offer fun activities including face painting, lawn games, live music and arts and crafts featuring the Teal Pumpkin Project.
The volunteer arm of FARE in Connecticut has its roots in New Canaan.  The Food Allergy Initiative (FAI) was initially founded by Helen and David Jaffe of New Canaan, with a core group of committed parents and grandparents from NYC in 1997.  FAI initiated efforts to raise awareness of food allergies and fund research for a cure.  The Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at Mount Sinai was established at the same time.   FAI eventually merged with FAAN (Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network) to form FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education) in 2012 forming a national support network for the 15 million individuals suffering from severe food allergies.  Helen has always been passionate and inclusive about educating the community with ways in which to improve the lives of those living with food allergies, whether it is in restaurants, schools, or simply among the general population and she continues to lead this effort under FARE.
With a dedicated committee of over twenty women, including Helen Jaffe, Olivia English and Saira Rizvi all of New Canaan, FARE CT hosted its inaugural FARE Walk for Food Allergy in 2014, drawing over 500 enthusiastic walkers and raising over $100,000, helping to advance food allergy research, education, advocacy and awareness initiatives.
Sponsorship opportunities remain available, enabling businesses to show their support for families who are managing food allergies.

Ron, Tina and the entire New Balance Team invite you to participate in the 7th Annual All Out For Autism Race on Friday, August 21st! Proceeds from this year’s event will help fund a special needs playground at the YMCA.The idea for the Race was spawned in 2009 by Ron and Tina who were surprised by the number of individuals with autism who came into the store. In their ongoing efforts to give back to the community, Ron and Tina and SPED*Net saw an opportunity to extend their mission of health and fitness into the community. The impact of this event’s past success can be seen in Waveny Park’s sensory friendly Fitness Path.
This popular end of summer happening will attract over 600 Runners and Walkers! This Friday the event “kicks” off in front of the New Balance Store at 128 Main Street with a “friendly” competition between Ron Rosenfeld and Tucker Murphy: These two community leaders will be competing in a board-breaking competition that symbolizes the perseverance shown by children with autism as they break through barriers every day. The officiator of this match is Leif Becker, a 2x WORLD RECORD Martial Artist!  Show your support and “Get on Board” by heading to New Balance this week and purchasing a board for $10. The more boards Ron and Tucker break the more money goes towards the new YMCA Playground!
In addition, there will be performances by New Canaan’s School of Rock and a surprise guest to be announced!

Proud Sponsor of Camp LiveGirl

camplivegirlWalter Stewart’s is a proud sponsor for Camp LiveGirl in New Canaan. Camp LiveGirl brings together middle school girls from Bridgeport, Stamford, and New Canaan, facilitating bonding through sports and leadership activities. The LiveGirl summer camp experience teaches leadership in a diverse, team-based environment. Girls learn to focus on communication, understanding, and camaraderie, all while participating in sports, activities, and learning from leadership role models.
“The idea for Camp LiveGirl—that’s a short ‘i’ in ‘Live,’ a verb—came to the West family over the winter. Transformed after hosting a Fresh Air Fund girl from Queens, N.Y. last summer, mom Sheri and dad Brian gathered the kids (Conor, then an 8th-grader, Olivia, 6th and Donovan, 2nd) to discuss how else they could make a difference, now that their Fresh Air Fund guest, Janiyia Rodriguez, had aged out of the program. “We all felt very grateful, but we were cognizant that there are plenty of Janiyias out there, and as a family, we brainstormed about some way we could touch more lives,” Sheri recalled on a recent morning. What was born at that family meeting will materialize next Monday, as 30 middle school-aged girls from Bridgeport and Stamford join 20 similarly aged New Canaan girls for a unique, weeklong camp designed to empower, educate and engage its participants through multiple sports, identity- and confidence-building exercises, camaraderie, healthy living instruction and inspiring and informative speakers. Dubbed ‘LiveGirl’ because the Wests call their daughter ‘Liv’ for short, the camp is not only a deeply personal effort led by Sheri West that follows months of planning—it also results from a coordinated effort across a large swath of the New Canaan community.”

New Canaan Sidewalk Sale July 18th

This Year’s Sidewalk Sale is Set for July 18, 2015!

Sponsored annually for 50 years by the Chamber of Commerce, the event’s root actually began in the 1920’s, when merchants put their wares on the sidewalks for sale.
The fair offers local residents and regional visitors an action packed, bargain filled, entertaining, and delicious way to spend a summer day in one of the most charming towns in Connecticut. The event has tons of activities planned and the merchants pull out all the stops! Sure, there’s a little inventory spring cleaning going on, where many of the best deals spawn from, but some merchant’s have specifically ordered their customers’ favorite items to be sold at discounted prices for just that day. There will be entertainment in all shapes and sizes!

Peter’s Stocking winner Leighton Busby, age 5, with Ann Cheney and Alex Stewart

Five year old Leighton Busby was the happy winner of this year’s Peter’s Stocking drawing. In the Holiday spirit of giving, Leighton kept a few toys for herself and generously donated the rest of the toys to Karl’s Chevrolet’s Toys for Tots drive. The memory of the late Peter Lewis lives on with this favorite holiday tradition, which he started in 1978.
Walter Stewart’s sent checks totaling $2545.13 to participating local non-profit organizations this week, proceeds from the market’s annual “Holiday Donation Days T-Bill drive” held in December.
“The Holiday T-Bill drive caps off another successful year for our Donation Days program. We’re pleased to support our shoppers’ favorite local organizations!” said Alex Stewart, General Manager of Walter Stewart’s, and great-grandson of the store’s founder.
Walter Stewart’s shoppers designated T-Bill Rewards to the following participating organizations:
NC Food Pantry ($994.94); NC Community Foundation ($395.21); NC Cares ($189.18); Strays & Others ($185.63); ABC ($166.92); Horizons ($89.74); Staying Put ($77.75); NC Nature Center ($58.40); Get About Van ($56.86); Visiting Nurse ($49.50); NC Historical Society ($46.10); NC Society for the Arts ($45.68); Outback Teen Center ($41.97); Arts for Healing ($38.70); NC Library ($32.16); Day Care Center of NC ($28.62); Red Cross ($26.61); NC Sewing Group ($21.16)
Stewart’s shoppers receive “T-Bill” rewards when they shop which they can use to help provide financial assistance to participating non-profits during Donation Days fundraisers held throughout the year. This year through the T-Bill Donation Days program Walter Stewart’s has donated a total of $4715.13 to participating local non-profits, $1707,65 to the NCHS Scholarship Fund, as well as over 100 Thanksgiving turkey dinners to Person-to-Person for local families in need.
