Peak Season: Sumo Citrus

Now is the time when most citrus fruits are at their sweetest and juiciest. Stewart’s has so many delicious citrus varieties to enjoy, from Stem & Leaf Tango Mandarins and Ruby Tango Blood Oranges to Cara Cara Navels and Heirloom Navels. And Walter Stewart’s has the sweetest fresh-squeezed OJ! One of our favorites is the Sumo Citrus. This colossal piece of late-winter citrus has its origins in Japan (where its known as the Dekopon) and is now grown in California’s Central Valley. Beneath the easy-peeling skin, Sumo segments are so plump with juice they literally pop! These are the perfect mandarins for creating orange supremes. Sumo juice is super-sweet, abundant and refreshing. Look for the distinctive top-knot crowning each rugged-looking orb.

Introducing Arethusa Farm Dairy local cheeses

Continuing our commitment to offering the best local foods by the best local producers, Walter Stewart’s is pleased to offer Arethusa Farm Dairy cheeses locally produced in Litchfield, CT! Shop Stewart’s for your favorite style of Arethusa Farm semi-hard and aged cheeses . . .
Bella Bantam
“With the comforting aromas of fresh, buttered popcorn, Bella Bantam is supple and creamy, making it the perfect snack time staple.”
Crybaby
“We set out to make a Swiss-style cheese that was at home on a cheese board as it was tucked in a ham sandwich. Meet Crybaby, so named for its multitude of tiny “eyes”. Crybaby is matured for at least four months in our state-of-the-art aging caves before release, giving it a subtle, nutty aroma, while still delivering that unique Swiss cheese bite.”
Europa
“Our take on a classic Dutch Gouda, Europa features wispy aromas of butterscotch and toasted nuts that give way to a savory, brothy flavor. Its smooth, dense paste makes Europa a great cheese for melting – on burgers, sandwiches, or a bowl of piping hot soup.”
Mt. Tom
“Inspired by the cheese of the Swiss Alps and named for own local alpine monolith, Mt. Tom is sweet and nutty with a light, mouthwatering tang.”
Tapping Reeve
“Named for Litchfield Law School founder Tapping Reeve, this savory Colonial-style cheese is both sharp and refined, not unlike its namesake.”

available in our center store cheese case.

T-Bill Drive Results for AmeriCares and Red Cross

Walter Stewart’s Customers Donate ‘T-Bill’ Rewards to AmeriCares & Red Cross

Together we raised $7289 ($5205 for AmeriCares; $2084 to American Red Cross) to aid victims of Tropical Storm
Harvey.

Walter Stewart’s Market patrons have raised $5,205.00 toward Americares relief efforts for victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria and $2084 toward the American Red Cross. According to Alex Stewart, shoppers have donated their accumulated T-bill savings at check-out to the organization.
Americares relief workers are on the ground in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, teaming up with local partners to mobilize medical outreach, including the distribution of water, insulin, asthma medication and tetanus vaccines.
Special Events Manager Michelle Aquino noted that more than $9 million in technical assistance, gifts-in-kind and operational support has already been earmarked for partners in the U.S Virgin Islands, St. Maarten, Puerto, Texas and Florida.

New Canaan’s oldest retail establishment is setting up a system through which it will aid those displaced and otherwise devastated by Tropical Storm Harvey in Texas.

“We are like everyone else—we are seeing devastation on the news,” Alex Stewart said. It has affected everyone. It’s a catastrophic thing and so if there’s a way we can help, we will.”
Thousands have lost their homes, and thousands have been rescued since the largest rainfall in mainland U.S. history struck coastal Texas on Friday. At least 15 people have been killed and officials warn that the toll is certain to rise as the full effects of the storm become clear.
Walter Stewart’s customers who participate in the T-Bill Rewards program—a card may be obtained from the store’s customer service staff or online here—will have an option to donate their balances to the fundraising effort. The 1907-established business in recent years has made the same offer following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the 2010 Haiti earthquake, according to the Stewarts.
The aid for Harvey victims is “really customer-driven,” Doug Stewart said.
“We have gotten a lot of feedback from customers asking if they could donate T-bills to help out,” he said.
Under the rewards program, Stewart’s customers accrue points with each purchase they make and can use their balances toward free items in the store or for services, and they can also donate T-Bills back during drives such as this one.
